Tutor-Marked Assignments are the continuous assessment component of every NOUN course. They account for 30% of your final grade in each course, with the remaining 70% coming from your end-of-semester examination. Each course typically has three TMAs (TMA1, TMA2, TMA3) spread across the semester.
TMAs are submitted through the NOUN student portal within a defined window for each assessment. Once the deadline passes, the system locks the TMA and no submission is accepted. Missing a TMA means a zero for that assessment and a direct reduction in your final grade.
TMA questions range from multiple-choice to short-answer and essay formats, depending on the course and faculty. They are drawn directly from the study units covered up to that point in the semester.
How TMA Scores Affect Your Grade
| TMA Score (30%) | Exam Score (70%) | Total | Grade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30/30 (100%) | 49/70 (70%) | 79/100 | B |
| 24/30 (80%) | 49/70 (70%) | 73/100 | B |
| 0/30 (0%) | 70/70 (100%) | 70/100 | B |
| 0/30 (0%) | 49/70 (70%) | 49/100 | F |
As the table shows, neglecting TMAs entirely forces you to score 71%+ in the exam just to pass. Strong TMA scores give you a vital buffer for exam day.
TMA Tips for Busy Working Students
Set Calendar Reminders
At semester start, note every TMA deadline in your phone calendar with a reminder 7 days before. The portal does not send email reminders automatically.
Submit Early, Never Last Minute
The NOUN portal gets extremely slow near TMA deadlines as thousands of students submit simultaneously. Submit at least 48 hours before the deadline.
Read the Relevant Units First
TMA questions come directly from your study units. Reading Units 1–5 before TMA1 ensures you answer from the course material rather than guessing.
Screenshot Your Submission
After submitting, take a screenshot of the confirmation page showing your score or submission receipt. This is your proof if any dispute arises.
